Post 3 Christine

I think the second one is more informative because it give us more specific information about the Thanksgiving day. I prefer the second one. I had not know very well about Thanksgiving day, due this video I have learned a lot about the origin, history and some way to celebrate it. Compare the two video, the second give us more details which can let us know more about it.

The Dutch hymn  "We Gather Together" is talk about all of people together to thanks for the given by the god. When people have trouble and challenge, god give people belief and people can survive in all of trouble. People sing this song to thanks for all of given.

Blog Post #3 Paulina

Thanksgiving day

1) Which is more informative? Which do you like better? Why?

I prefer the second video, because i thought that explains better the information it is more clear about what says and is more informative, also has more pictures that show us how it could all the proses. This video talks more about the pass and the first talk a little more about now a day and how we celebrated.

2) Express the overall message of the song

This song talk about being thankful with good for all the this that give to us, and telling him that we are going to still singing praises for him, because he has being good with us and all together ask for more blessings.

Cássio - Thanksgiving questions

1- Which video is more informative? Which do you like better? Why?

The second one give us more detailed informations about the origin and historic facts of Thanksgiving. I liked the both, but it depends on the objective of watching. For example, if you just need to know a notion about the holiday it better for you watch the video from History Channel. But if you need study more and want to have exact informations is better for you watch the second video.

2 - The hymn talk about how we should be grateful to God. Because He always is with us, helping us, making us feel better, keeping the evil far way from us.

Blog Post #3 - Due before class on Tuesday, December 2

First of all, thank you for your very interesting comments on blog #2. It was especially good that so many of you commented on each other's comments.

This blog post will relate to the Thanksgiving lesson you had in class. First, watch and listen to these 2 short videos. You saw the first one in class, but not the second one. Please evaluate these 2 explanations. Which is more informative? Which do you like better? Why?

The second part will be to listen again to the Dutch hymn "We Gather Together" ( see below). Can you paraphrase each verse in your own words, and try to express the overall message of the song?

Again please feel free to agree, disagree and argue with each other! And please post your comments where it says "Post a Comment."

Thank you,
Diana

Yhinny says that Frank Gehry¨s buildings are all over the world. what is her point?
It means that his work is very famous all around the globe. You can find his building in many countries; like Brazil, German and USA.

Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain
Not at all, I think that his buildings are great and design buildings is what he knows to do!!!!

Some say Frank Gehry does not pay enough attention to the eviroment. Woud these students agree with this criticism? Woud you? Explain
Mmm... not much, because he uses many mterials and those material don't cause damage to the environment. Like steel, copper, terracota, etc

That his work is very famouse so he designed very important building not only on his country even on other clothes,

I think the bridges required an engeneer does not have to be preaty but a building on a city has to show the citiziens´ feelings so has to be preatty as Frank Gehry´s work

Some say Frank Gehry does not pay enough attention to the eviroment. Woud these students agree with this criticism? Woud you? Explain
No and I would not either. Frank Gehry uses diferent materials but not the kind of materials that make pollution. Also we can call Frank´s work as a green way to buid

Frank Gehry

1.      Yhinny says that Frank Gehry’s buildings are all over the world. What is her point?
She wanted to express that Gehry is an international and well-known artist and architect. He had the great opportunity to work all over the world and in some of the most important cities in the world such as New York, Berlin, Prague, Paris, and other important population centers.

2.      Michalel suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree?
No, I don’t agree with this statement because Gehry is a great artist an architect and he has more potential to explore. I think that he could also design a bridge but he prefers the challenge that a building is .

3.      Some say that Frank Gehry doesn’t pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism?
No, they don’t agree with that statement because Frank as a resourceful architect uses materials that are already used, and he also tries to use some materials that in some cases are not uses and wasted after the construction.

Cássio - Answers / Blog #2 - Frank Gehry

1) Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world. What is her point?

1. She said that the buildings maybe can't make Michael likes them. But There are building from Frank Gehry in all of the world. So if his work become popular in many places it means that is a good work and many people liked it.

2) Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain.

2. I disagree with him. Because almost architect projects involve the design with aesthetic and fuction. Sometimes parts of building that we think that is just to be beautifuil, have a fuction, for example in the ghothic churches, the arches warhead.

3) Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Explain.

3. He uses kinds of materials, like chains in his buildings, of course is better than left it become trash and damage the environment, but I don't know if him is really worried about the nature or is just catch attention for his work.

My answers. // Fabian Tapia.

  1. Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world. What is her point?
She thinks that Gehry's buildings are all over the world and that they are very distinctive and singular.

  1. Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain.
I think that he could build whatever he wants to build , always saving the environment. The people, in my opinion, need to see something different to their senses to break the boring routine.

  1. Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Explain.

No, they don't. They believe that is good Gehry's building materials are reused and I agree with them cause' this is a better way to turn something that could be trash in something useful.

2. - Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain.
I don't agree because I think he can use his ability for both things, I mean if he wants to do building that what he would do better instead being designed bridges and all has to be about passion and if he isn't interested about it how can he made the as well as the building

3.-Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Explain.

No they dont, they prefer  that his use different materials instead thronging away and I´m agree with them.

1 Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world. What is her point?

She disagrees with the guy’s opinion about Frank Gehry’s work. In his opinion the buildings the architect constructed are boring and they will be forgotten after some time. The girl tries to change his mind by arguing that Frank Gehry is an architect of great renown. His buildings are innovative and there are so many people that like his work. That is why his buildings are present in different places in the world.

2 Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain.

I disagree with his opinion because we already have so many people who work constructing buildings only in a practical way or just to supply a function. We need architects who inspire people, who search for innovation, and make aesthetically different places. That is why architects are considered artists too. They make people think about their job, and bring the new.

3 Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Explain.

I am sure they would disagree, and I would too. As the guys in the video said, Frank Gehry used recycled materials in his buildings, like old buildings wood, instead of throwing it way. That shows how he was concerned about the environment.

1. - Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world. What is her point?
She was trying to say that he is so famous and many people like his building art.

2. - Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. Do you agree? Explain.
I don't agree because I think that is a different kind of art. Many people has different art interests so all his building are so nice, are so different. Obviously it depends of what the person likes, but in my opinion I like modern art.

3.-Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay enough attention to the environment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Explain.

They would have different opinions. Yhinny will disagree because she is so excited about Frank Gehry designs. I don't agree with this criticism because I think all artist need to think about their environment and I don't think he would be the exception.

Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world because maybe she likes the work of Frank Gehry, but not because it's true.
Michael suggests that someone like Frank Gehry should use his skills in practical ways like designing bridges rather than for designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. I agree with Michael, I think that Frank Gehry could design beautifuls bridges.
Some say Frank Gehry doesn't pay attention to the enviroment. Would these students agree with this criticism? Would you? Because they are fans from Frank, I think they desagree. Me too.
Blog 2 González Fidel.

Yhinny is talking about the Frank Gehry´s Buidings in a world opinion. He´s like an international architect since hes buildings are located in many countries and are like anything else.

I´m agree in some aspects with Michael. I´m also think that for architecture, the functionality is more important than the aesthetics. In fact, I like the "minimalism" I´m only disagree with the opinion that Frank Will be forgoten by the story. If Michael does not apreciate the Franks work, that does not mean everyone else too.

If the building are made using a los of material and is very expensive, I would be agree about Frank do not pay enough attention to the enviroment.
I like the green buildings that are friendly with the enviroment.

Blog 2 -----Christine

Yhinny says that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world because in her opinion Frank Gehary's buildings is great and is different with others. She said this because she think Mike misunderstand Frank Gehry's designs. She want to express Frank is a great designer in the world, and Frank Gehry have a lot of designs.
I am not agree with Michael's opinion. Frank Gehry is a great architect. He designed a lot of famous buildings. In Michael's opinion, maybe he think Frank's design isn't practical, and if he design a bridge is more useful. I think all of building have a special meaning that Frank want to express. Although Frank's building are different with others, it is base on the original buildings. Frank's building combine the science and art. We should build more buildings like Frank's.
In their opinion, they think Frank doesn't pay enough attention to the environment.  Frank use the old materials to build the building is better throw that away, but why did he didn't use modern materials which is good for environment? In my opinion, I think this is a ambiguous question for me. If he use the old materials, he can build so amazing buildings. In the other hand, using the old materials is bad for the environment. I don't know how to choose, it's better Frank can use the modern materials build this amazing buildings.

Saturday, November 15, 2014

1. Yhinny disagrees with Michael for the opinion about Frank Gehry. She thought Frank Gehry's building was popular for many people. She said we could find his works all over the world because she wanted to prove her perspective is right.
2. I don't agree with it. First, Michael criticizes Frank Gehry should use his skill in practical way. But Frank Gehry did it. The functional and aesthetics are coexist in his building. Second, Frank Gehry has talent for build aesthetics buildings, but I don't think he also has talent for design bridges. Because there are many different between building and bridge, such as mathematics, physics and so on. Frank Gehry might not totally put all his ability on other field. it likes asking a strong general to use his sword hand to embroider, or asking a gentle and frail-looking scholar to fight a war. Frank Gehry's works are popular in mainstream society, and he enjoys his design style. so he shall design things he is skilled in.
3. I don't think those students agree with the criticism. Because they talked about Frank Gehry like use old materials such as plywood, chain-link fence, and they think it's better than throw them away. I think Frank Gehry did a good job. it's creatively that he designed so strong building by using those old materials. I think it's not only  save resources, but also guiding construction industry into a new area.

Blog Post #2 Winnie

  1. Yhinny said that Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world because she likes the building that Frank Gehry designed. She disagree what Michael said. Why she stressed Frank Gehry's buildings are all over the world,I guess that she want to prove Gehry’s works were poplar and approbatory.
  2. Actually,I don’t agree with that. First,Gehry is good at designing aesthetically pleasing buildings. He enjoy it ,and he did great job. Also,a lot of people like his works.Second, I think it’s right that he did what he likes to do .For example, Vincent Van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter. You can’t let him became Florence School painter. Both are painting, but there are two different style.
  3. I dont think all of the students agree with that criticism. because the girl said to use old building material chain link fence and plywood are much better than throw them away. in fact. In 1970s Gehry started utilizing simple building material like plywood and sheet metal. Also,he is famous for using chain link fence. i think that he was concerned about the environment, but old materials give his works strong feeling.

Exercise 2 (Jessica)

1) She disagreed what the guy said before and tried examplify why he wasn’t right. He said Frank Gehry's buildings are interesting just for few time, then they become boring. However, Yhinny his buildings are all over the world. It means, people like his work so much that they are spread around the world.

2) No, I totally disagree. It can looks uncomfortable and useless in first view because it is different and unknown, but the best innvations generate changes. Professionals of all areas have to break paradigms. If all projects were designed only to supply a function, the discovery of the new would be delayed. Leaving of the comfort zone is essential for the generation of new styles. Combining between function and aesthetic is completely possible and works such as franklin inspire it happen.

3) I could realize they don’t agree with this affirmation. At least a girl said Frank Gehry uses old building material to build his projects and it is better than  throwing them away. I don’t know so much about how he works, but it is important to know that to worry about the environment is not just using old materials, it is also to think where it will be build or how it will affect the people, for example. So, maybe this statement comes from issues such as it.

1) I knew that in the US already had apartheid years ago. The black people were prohibited to enter and stand in the same places that white people. They didn't have the same rights. I knew about the importance of Martin Luther King. I knew also about Ku Klux Klan, that was a group who defend the white supremacy and was against black people, their hate could kill many black people, their ideals still keep actually. Even in nowadays black people still suffer prejudice and in US the society is too much separate also. We can find places with only black people. For many people in US, it's ok make joke about black people, and there are people that don't feel intimidate to say opinions based on the skin color.

2) I like the Jackie Robison's history. I already knew somethings about his history. He was the first black man to play officially in the Major League. He always was good with sports. But he suffered prejudice many times, before join in the Baseball team and after too.

3) I dind't know that topics about racism were so discussed on the medias. I didn't know either that there are many people that were important to the history of the black people in USA

Racial Relations in U.S. - Fabrício Lima

1 - I know some things about racial relations in the America. Some of that things a heard and saw from movies. Other things I learned during the school, in the History classes. I know that many years ago the U.S. was a slavery country like Brazil. At that time white people used to think they were superior than colored people, and this took a long time to be changed. I could see how black people were treated before in the recent movie “12 Years a Slave”. I also know that even when the slavery was made illegal in U.S. white people continued to discriminating the African-Americans. The segregation between white and black people was very strong, and it last so many years. The African-Americans did not have the same rights as white people for a long time, so it led the black to fight for their civil rights. The strongest manifestations took place on 50s and 60s. They were very important for the black people in this country, as we can see in the musical movie “Hairspray”.

2 - Amy Vanderbilt’s essay was the most interesting to me because I can see how sensible she was. She taught her child to treat people as equals even at that time. It makes me restore my belief in good people in the world, and it reflects on nowadays too.

3 - I did not know there was so many white people fighting and supporting the African-American’s civil rights during the segregation period, like Dan Gediman said in the audio. It is very interesting because I only saw the racial segregation in America from a different point of view. I never thought there was a lot of white people who really cared about how black people should be treated as equal.
1.     I knew about racial relation in U.S by the movie “Gone with the Wind” when I was a child. This movie gives me a deep impression. The rich white southern planter and poor black slaves. But in this time, I don’t really realize racial relation because I haven’t touch with it.  I got further understand with racial relation was when I come U.S. Many people are discussed about it.  I am aware of racial relation is a very big problem for U.S society before, and always had many prejudice and discrimination between black people and white people. But now, this situation is improved.
2.     I am interested in Amy Vanderbilt’s recall. “Children uncoated in prejudice and class-consciousness enjoy people for what they are. As they mature, our society soon sets them right as to their place in it. More often than not, they accept this place without question, and thereby shut themselves off from warm human contact with many of their fellows.” He said. We should know the bad human nature, such as prejudice and discrimination is none exist. We accept something by our living environment, both good and bad.

3.     I knew about racial relation early, but I didn’t know it’s so severe before.  Since I saw the movie named “Django Unchained” in last year, I just know how black people had suffered. But I know we never image or feel the true injuries that those people had sustain. I just hope we can make our society better and all estrangement and prejudice can fall away.

Exercise 1 (Jessica)

1) I knew racial questions were much discussed in US. I already read and saw many news and films portraying discrimination. The Butler (film of 2013) is great movie. It tells about the life trajectory of a black man in different periods of time in US, since he was a child. His struggle was to get a job, but it was hard, since he just could get a little money. It's exciting and sad because you can notice the cruelty how he was treated.

2) it was uncomfortable reading about the Billy Eckstine's store. He talked about his travel to a place where a policeman asked to him if the people was treating him well. Although people are trying to improve their thoughts and actions, it already should be normal. It is shameful to know that there are people who still believe black skin color means bad person.

3) listening to these cases and since I arrived here, I could realize the strong feeling of segregation. White people speak, dress up and act different from black people. Beyond that, when one refers to another they generalize all people, for example, when a black person refers to a white person they talk as every white people are equal from each other. They talk as one doesn't like other. Another curiosity is you can see black people and white people, but rarely you can see brown people. It looks like there aren't black and white couples.

Sunday, November 9, 2014

1) Race and racism have a long history in the U.S.The story I learned before,Oprah Winfrey, Jackie Robinson and Arrangement in black and white. These story showed prejudice and discrimination are big issues and controversies related to our lives.Even the U.S is a democratic state, but racism still exist.
2)  Story came from Amy Vanderbilt,a little boy kept turning around to smile to an elderly Negro. This one more attractive to me because it show Children uncoached in prejudice and class-consciousness enjoy people for what they are. When them grow up,the environment, society and education change their concept, even though they didn't mean it.
3) A lot of things I didn't know before. For instance, how the racism better than before, essayists gave us much better understanding of what it was like to be an African-American in the 1950s and President Harry S. Truman desegregated the armed services in 1948.The situation is much better than before because many people contributed to the racism.
I know a little about racial relation in the U.S. In the past, colored people likes slavery in some white people's opinion. Colored people can't attend some public activities. Some white people look down on colored people. In that time, white people have prejudice with other color people.
I am interested in Jackie Robinson because I know something about him and he is famous person in baseball area. I like what he said" there is a chance for you". Whatever, only if we have chance we need to do something. Jackie Robinson use the chance, he try his best to play baseball and he become the first African-American baseball player in MLB. He is one of representative person in racial relation.
By this audio, I have learned in the past the race is a so serious problem in US. Black people faced a lot of  problem in America. Sometimes, although the people have ability to do something, they can to do because they didn't have right. They can do nothing they want. They lose the right they should have. But they insist what they want, and they are going to get that they should have.
