1) I knew racial questions were much discussed in US. I already read and saw many news and films portraying discrimination. The Butler (film of 2013) is great movie. It tells about the life trajectory of a black man in different periods of time in US, since he was a child. His struggle was to get a job, but it was hard, since he just could get a little money. It's exciting and sad because you can notice the cruelty how he was treated.
2) it was uncomfortable reading about the Billy Eckstine's store. He talked about his travel to a place where a policeman asked to him if the people was treating him well. Although people are trying to improve their thoughts and actions, it already should be normal. It is shameful to know that there are people who still believe black skin color means bad person.
3) listening to these cases and since I arrived here, I could realize the strong feeling of segregation. White people speak, dress up and act different from black people. Beyond that, when one refers to another they generalize all people, for example, when a black person refers to a white person they talk as every white people are equal from each other. They talk as one doesn't like other. Another curiosity is you can see black people and white people, but rarely you can see brown people. It looks like there aren't black and white couples.
Jessica and Jen, I am so glad you both saw "The Butler." I did too. Did I mention that when we read the Oprah Winfrey story in class? I thought it was powerful and very well-done. A good history lesson, too.
ReplyDeleteJessica, I find your observation about seeing "very few brown people" in New York very interesting. I had thought that we see people of every color in New York, but that is not so true in other parts of the U.S.
I think we never talked about "The Butler" in class before. I can't remember.
ReplyDeleteProf. Diana, I mean, we can see people of every color in NYC, but real americans, not. Most part are from other countries. At least, my little experience in here, I couldn,t see.
